Introduction
Okay so you've grind through level 1 until now!! Level 70 and voila~ You're an ice/lightning mage! Exciting ain't it? So what's so special for our 3rd job? As you all know, the most distinct ability of an I/L mage is the ability to freeze. Now in 3rd job we get to freeze multiple mobs! Not only that, we have the strongest spell, even stronger than F/P mage, which is ThunderSpear which deals massive damage! And even better we have the ability to lock spells of monsters. Combining all those skills together makes I/L mage not only a very good solo character, but also a very beneficial and supportive character in a party
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3rd Job Skills
Ice Strike
A very useful skill. It is the same as thunderbolt in 2nd job, which means it is AOE skill but it is much better since it can freeze at the same time. Also it is a better skill in terms of the range of the skill. Thunderbolt can only kill mobs in a horizontal range whereas IS not only has a bigger range, the skill is effective in a radius range, meaning you can hit mobs at a certain platform, and also kill mobs at another platforms which are higher and lower than you. The best thing is you can even snipe the mobs from a safe platform given its large range, giving you zero damage. Freeze effect lasts for two seconds at maxed level. There is lag time between casting interval. Thus, it will only work best and most efficiently with magic booster.
Magic Composition
A stronger version of ice beam, you gain 1.25x advantage of damage when used against ice weak mobs. In addition, it also has lightning element in it, meaning you deal extra damage on lightning weak mobs as well. Max damage dealt to the mobs if the mob is weak against both. After you max MC, ice beam will be considered obsolete. It will be your main attack skill.
Thunder Spear
The most powerful skill in 3rd job for ice mage. At maxed level, TS has a basic attack of 170. Adding meditation and EA effect, it can deal incredible damage. Works best against lightning weak mobs. I’ve seen a video of a level 151 ice mage dealing 20k damage on Vikings using TS. However, there is one downside associated with this skill, that is the casting speed is slow, much slower than IS and MC, rendering it a less useful skill when training. It is mostly used in combination with MC, Seal and even with lightning.
Seal
Another very useful skill, even for ice mage. At maxed level you have a 95% chance of success rate of sealing multiple mobs for 15 seconds. Using this locks the skills of monsters, making them unable to cast their spells and can only walk to you, thus avoiding a lot of damage. With this skill you can kill high level mobs with ease i.e. sealing werewolf/lycanthrope disables their claws, sealing thanatos disables their ice attack, sealing Vikings disables their bullet and many many more. Anyway, it does not work on boss though.
Magic Booster
Just like any other boosters, it speeds up the casting speed, thus killing speed. Since MC, IS and TS have lag time between casting, it is certainly advised to have some points in this skill. However, 11 points into it is more than enough. Level 11 MB +2 speed for 110 seconds. We just need the +2 that’s it. No more than 11 levels.
Partial Resistance
I’m still having my doubts for this skill. Honestly, I think this skill does not help much for current version of Maplestory. Just look at the number of mobs which have ice/lightning attacks. There are not many. However, it might be useful in the future when Maplestory comes out with newer mobs and maps. We’ll never know. However, it never hurts to put one point into it. Level 1 PR gives 23% resistance against ice/lightning attacks, which is definitely better than 0%. Many debate between Seal and PR. But from what I’ve seen so far, Seal proves more useful to me.
Element Amplification
A must max skill. Although your mp consumption is doubled at maxed level, your damage increases by 35% more. It is stackable with meditation, meaning the effect of meditation and EA can be simultaneous. This is because meditation is an active skill while EA is passive. Once you have points in EA, the skill works automatically. You do not have to cast it. You may frown upon the increased consumption of potions, but for higher damage, I say it’s worth it.

Other alternatives such as maxing TS first is highly discouraged and not recommended although TS can deal really high damage, but it is really slow and to level fastest and more efficiently, maxing IS first is greatly encouraged.
Essentially, MC, IS, EA and TS are the must max skills. The builds above max IS first as it is thought to be a better build. Maxing IS first enable you to mass kill, which helps in leveling faster. However, the above builds serve to be just a guide and you may not need to follow exactly the order in which the skills are maxed. You can modify here and there a little bit. You can always max MC first if you think maxing it first is better, and put maxing IS at a later stage. If you think the first point you gained after advancing 3rd job should be in PR, then go ahead. The above builds are what my ice mage will be following; in terms of the order the skills are maxed. It is just a reference for you. That’s my point.
After reading the builds above, you can see that the ultimate debate is between seal and PR. Some people think seal is more useful while some others think PR is more useful. This is a matter of opinion. Different people have different opinions. I am just presenting the more common builds among our ice mage community and you can see that I do not state which build to go for precisely because of this reason.

3. Training spots
This section still needs much improvement. Since my level is not high enough, I do not have any experience in the training spots for higher levels. >.< It is greatly appreciated if those pros out there can share your training places with all of us. Thank you in advance. If there is any mistake or anything inappropriate, please do give feedbacks! I'll give credits accordingly. (:
*Some of the inputs are from forumers* (:
Lvl 70 – 80: Cellions/lioners, zombies, wraiths, hot sand, iron boar, mixed golem
Early 70s you'll pretty much stick to the mobs you were previously training on, most probably zombies and big kitties. However, if you're sick of zombies and cats, you can try hot sand. With the teleport portals and your pet looting, you can navigate through the whole map easily and efficiently, gaining about 10+% per hour, which is considered a good experience at your level. Alternatively, you may give it a try at iron boar or mixed golem.
Lvl 80 – 85: Hot sand, mixed golem
With maxed IS, you can probably start owning at mixed golem. Good spawn, experience and money there. The best experience you can get.
Lvl 85 – 100: Mixed golem, klock, Bain, sotong, buffoon, death teddies
At level 85, you'll stop missing Bain.
Lvl 100 - : Vikings
